If you just throw a resistor on the output of the amp like other (passive) attenuators, current and voltage are in phase with each other; it’s boring and faithful reproduction. The excitement comes when reactive attenuator with its inductance and magnetic field changing the phase relationship between current and voltage. They begin to cancel each other in certain places, and reinforce in others. They conspire together to screw up the signal coming out of the amp; that battle is what makes the reactive attenuator sound so dynamic and exciting.
